Look:

My birthplace, as it looked in the time I was born.

This was in the time I lived there. In summer and wintertime.

My father bought the house in the fifties. When he had found my mother, had married her and lived with her in the house, he gave the house a name: 'Gaudio Nostro', this is Latin for 'To our joy'. I am born in this house (in 1962), just like my two brothers and sister in the bedroom of my parents. Our cradle is still standing on the attic. During my study at the Academy of Arts in Groningen I was still living there. I went with the train every day, up and down to Groningen (and in the train I was reading a book). My father has stopped in 1981 with his practice as a veterinary surgeon, so then I could use this room as my studio during my study. My mother found it no problem if I did put my easel also in other places in the house, so I have often painted and made drawings of the corridor. I did it a little different every time (and did not paint all the doors that were there, if I though my composition required some less). I have lived in this house till I was 23 and half. By then I had my diplom for teaching and went to The Haque for a temporary job at a HBO-J. My father died then soon. My mother died only some years ago. It's a house you don't leave very quickly, once you started living there. Because you have so many room and space and freedom to go your own way. I have had a very happy childhood here.

Now the house (and the extra ground behind) is sold.
